AAYA’s First Volunteering Event

Enhancing Senior Care: AAYA's Inaugural Volunteer Initiative

The first volunteering event held under new leadership, Hoon Jung, at AAYA, was at the Brightview Senior Living in Tenafly, NJ. On March 2nd, 2024, a group of AAYA volunteers engaged in various activities to support the staff and assist the residents. Currently, this volunteering event is being held every week from 1pm to 4pm, and there are plans to increase the number of hours and days that this event is held for. AAYA’s leaders are continuing to expand volunteering opportunities and events for youths to “engage with their community in a productive and meaningful manner.”

At the Brightview Senior Living in Tenafly, AAYA volunteers assist the staff to complete tasks in an effective and efficient manner, providing residents with a positive experience. Because volunteers are present from 1pm to 4pm, they work alongside the staff to serve and attend to any residents having lunch, clean up after the residents, and set up for dinner. AAYA volunteers also held a tech tutoring session with any senior citizen who had trouble/problems with their phones or devices. All residents received one-on-one assistance if needed, and they were taught how to use the App Store on their phones, texting and calling, adding contacts, and how to avoid scams. Following the tech tutoring session, residents could partake in any available activities, and AAYA volunteers engaged in such activities to provide residents with a more fun experience. AAYA looks to continue hosting events like these to provide senior citizens with a more lively experience and assist the staff.
