Highlighted Film: Surf Nation

Recently, the documentary Surf Nation premiered on World Channel and is now streaming on World Channel, Youtube, and PBS. This documentary was directed and produced by a diverse team, including several Asian Americans, with the goal of connecting with more Asian American youth. Surf Nation takes place in China’s southernmost province, Hainan, where hundreds of aspiring Olympians train as part of the Chinese National Surf team. The film follows two of the top surfers, Alex, 17, and Lolo, 22, as they train, struggle, succeed, and discover who they really are and what they want their future to be. Surf Nation provides the audience with exposure to aspects of Asian culture and the immense pressures that these young people have to deal with. Surf Nation’s portrayal of the challenges and triumphs of Chinese surfers as they navigate their dreams and handle immense expectations has earned it several prestigious film awards, including Best Feature at the Honolulu Surf Film Festival and the Audience Award at the Santa Cruz Film Festival.
