Rockland County’s AANHPI Month Celebration Volunteering

By: Jack Dong

On May 19th, 2024, Rockland County celebrated its first AANHPI Month at the Rockland County Courthouse in New City, New York. AANHPI Month, which stands for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders, is a time to recognize and celebrate the cultures and histories of these people. It is important to immerse ourselves in our heritage to gain a better understanding of our cultures and the contributions of those before us. Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders have all made instrumental contributions to America, and their work cannot be overlooked. One such figure in history is Dr. Chien-Shiung Wu, a Chinese American physicist that contributed significantly to the field of atomic science. Wu worked on the top secret Manhattan Project, helping America develop atomic weapons to secure victory in WWII. Not only did Wu contribute significantly to the Manhattan Project, but she also improved technology for detection of radiation and uranium, and conducted groundbreaking research on beta decay. While the Nobel Prize committee ignored her contributions, it is important that we recognize her legacy and her contributions. Another important figure in history is Patsy Mink (Patsy Matsu Takemoto), who was born in Hawaii to Japanese immigrants. During Patsy’s education and career, she experienced discrimination, which only fueled her work in civil rights and equal opportunity. After completing her education, she would become the first woman in Hawaii to be a licensed attorney, and would become the first woman of color and Asian American to serve in the House of Representatives (1965-1977). Both Patsy’s and Wu’s contributions in American history cannot be ignored, and are crucial in paving paths for future generations.

AAYA attended and participated in Rockland County’s AANHPI Month Celebration Event, immersing ourselves in our culture and delving into our history. AAYA was able to experience cultural activities, traditional music performances, and learn more about our histories and cultures. Moreover, we were able to meet amazing members of the AANHPI community, NY State Senator Bill Weber, and District 14 Legislator and Legislature Vice Chair Aney Paul. AAYA is truly thankful for all of the volunteers and organizers of this event, allowing us to gain a better understanding and connection with our cultures and heritages.
