A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria on February 16, 2023. The epicenter was located near Gaziantep, causing extreme destruction in the region, particularly in Antakya. Another powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 followed later in the day. These earthquakes were the largest in Turkey since 1939 and among the strongest ever recorded in the Levant. The widespread damage covered an area of approximately 350,000 square kilometers, affecting an estimated 14 million people and leaving around 1.5 million people homeless. The death toll reached 59,259, making it the deadliest earthquake in Turkey's modern history and one of the deadliest worldwide in the 21st century. The total damages were estimated at $104 billion in Turkey and $14.8 billion in Syria, making these earthquakes among the costliest ever recorded.

In response to this devastating natural disaster, AAYA will be collecting clothing donations at the Old Tappan Borough Hall for a month.

Your old clothes can be a lifeline for someone in need. As Turkey continues to recover from the aftermath of the recent earthquakes, many families have lost everything.

Let’s stand in solidarity with Turkey during this difficult time. The recent earthquakes have caused widespread devastation and our support can make a difference. Let’s come together to help those affected and show that compassion knows no border.

AAYA is also planning to acquire first aid kits with the money that we raised from the volleyball and basketball donation that we had last year.
